Does Etsy allow AI art? Yes, with rules.

The short answer

Yes. In its Seller Handbook, Etsy says it has decided to continue to allow sellers to use their original prompts in combination with AI tools to create the artwork they sell on Etsy. The examples Etsy gives are a fantasy scene based on a seller's original prompt or inputs and produced by an AI generator, or a custom portrait of a buyer's pet generated using AI tools (Etsy Seller Handbook).

Where AI items fit: "Designed by a seller"

On July 9, 2024, Etsy introduced its Creativity Standards. Every item has to be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by the seller (Etsy News, TechCrunch). Etsy's help center puts seller-prompted AI creations under "Designed by a seller" and says they must disclose the use of AI (What Can I Sell on Etsy?).

What you have to disclose

1. AI use, in the listing description. Etsy: Sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI. A line on your About page alone doesn't match that wording. Here's how to word it.
2. Your production partner, if someone else prints it. If you use a print-on-demand company, Etsy's Seller Policy says you must disclose it in your listings. Etsy's help center explains how to add one in Shop Manager (Working with Production Partners).

What's not allowed

• AI prompt bundles on their own. Etsy says it prohibits the sale of AI prompt bundles because prompts should not be sold separately from the final artwork.
• Sexual content outside the rules. AI-generated nudity and sexual content must follow Etsy's Prohibited Items Policy.
• Using other people's likeness or rights. Etsy prohibits content that infringes the privacy, publicity, and personal rights of others.

What about AI listing photos and mockups?

Etsy's Seller Policy says listing photos should be your own photographs, not stock photos or artistic renderings, with limited exceptions for custom items and items made with a production partner (Etsy Seller Policy). If you're on print-on-demand, mockups are common, but read that section before relying only on them.

Separately, a New York State law that requires ads to disclose AI-generated "synthetic performers" (realistic people who don't exist) took effect on June 9, 2026 (NY Governor's office). That's a state law, not an Etsy rule. Printful's help center says it considers mockups in marketplace listings "likely in scope." See our mockup guide for details.

If Etsy removes a listing

Etsy says it added a Policy Violations page in Shop Manager and introduced listing-level appeals, starting with Creativity Standards violations, and plans to expand appeals in 2026 (Etsy News).

Quick answers

Can I sell AI art as digital downloads on Etsy?

Etsy's AI guidance talks about "artwork" and items "created with the use of AI", and we didn't find an exception for digital items. So plan on the same rules: your own prompts, and disclosure in the description.

Can I sell AI-generated t-shirt designs through Printify or Printful?

Do I have to disclose if I only used AI to write my title or description?

Etsy's rule talks about an item created with the use of AI. We haven't found an Etsy page that addresses AI-written listing text directly, so we can't give you a definite answer. Whatever tool wrote it, make sure the text accurately describes your item.

Has Etsy banned AI?

No. As of our last check (Oct 19, 2026), Etsy's Seller Handbook still allows seller-prompted AI creations with disclosure. We log any change, with sources, in the change log.
