Etsy's October 2026 AI update, explained.
On Oct 22, 2026 Etsy announced new rules for AI and listing photos. AI art is still allowed. Here's what changed, who it affects, and what to check in your shop.
General information, not legal advice. Etsy's own pages win if anything here differs. Quotes are from Etsy's announcement, Important updates to AI use on Etsy (Oct 22, 2026, by James Ossman, VP Customer Operations), and its Listing Image Requirements, both read on Oct 22, 2026.
1. You need one unedited photo
"Your listing must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, meaning the photo hasn't been edited or changed in any way. Some exceptions may apply depending on the types of items you sell."
Your other photos can still be edited, including with AI: to adjust lighting or colour, crop or resize images, or change backgrounds.
But All of your photos must accurately represent the item a buyer will receive, without hiding flaws or damage or making the item appear different.
Etsy's policy names what's not allowed: changing the product's actual color, texture or condition, hiding defects, or using AI to change the core design or features of a physical item.
The exceptions by item type
- Print-on-demand:
If a production partner prints your original design on a standard base product (like a t-shirt or mug), you may use a stock photo mockup, if the stock photo's owner has authorised its use.
- Digital downloads:
All other digital downloads should include a visual preview or excerpt of the content buyers will receive.
Only items without visual elements, like audio files, can use representative images, including AI-generated ones,as long as it doesn't mislead buyers.
- Customized or made-to-order:
use photos of real, finished items you've made in the past
. - Patterns, recipes, seeds and similar: include at least one real, unedited photo of something made using your product.
AI-generated images cannot be the only images used to show the finished result.
2. AI-generated patterns, recipes and instructions are out
"If you sell functional guides like patterns, recipes, or instructions, the information buyers rely on to create or use your item must be your own work, not generated by AI. This means AI-generated functional guides are no longer allowed on Etsy."
These listings also need to show an actual result made using your instructions, not an AI-generated or simulated result
. Etsy's AI page lists knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading patterns, recipes, project plans, manuals and how-to e-books as examples (Etsy Seller Handbook).
3. Bot-generated listings are banned
"Bot-generated listings without any human involvement aren't allowed. These listings will be removed and may also result in your shop being removed from Etsy."
4. Misleading photos can cost you the refund
"If your listing doesn't meet our updated image requirements, and a buyer opens a case because the item they received is materially different from your listing, you may be responsible for refunding the buyer."
Etsy's policy adds that it may remove the listing, and repeated violations can lead to shop removal.
What didn't change: AI art is still allowed
"we'll continue to allow AI-generated art when sellers play a clear creative role in what they create and are transparent about their process."
You still have to disclose AI in the listing description, and you cannot misrepresent AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own creation.
Etsy didn't announce any new mandatory AI checkbox or attribute. How to word the disclosure.
What else Etsy is rolling out
- The listing form gives guidance when it detects AI-generated images. Etsy says this will expand to existing images later.
- Stronger detection and enforcement. You can appeal a removal from the Policy violations page in Shop Manager.
- A new "Report this item to Etsy" reason for misleading AI imagery. At first, reports won't lead to immediate enforcement.
- "In the coming months," more ways to tell buyers when AI was used.
A heads-up on California SB 1050
Etsy's FAQ says that under California SB 1050, which takes effect Jan 1, 2027, listing images or videos may count as ads, and may need a clear disclosure if they prominently feature an AI-generated synthetic performer (a realistic human-looking figure or voice that isn't an identifiable real person). Etsy says to consult your own lawyer. New York already has a similar law; see AI-generated people in mockups.
What to check in your shop this week
- Existing listings count too. Etsy:
If any of your listings don't meet our new Listing Image Requirements, you'll need to update them.
- Physical items: add one unedited photo of the real item on a real background if you don't have one.
- Printables and other digital files: make sure there's a preview or excerpt of the actual file, not just styled mockups.
- Patterns and recipes: add a real photo of a finished result, and make sure the instructions are your own work.
- AI-edited photos: check they still match the item, and (Etsy's recommendation) say in the description that images were edited.
